Loch Ness Musings

Mr P..caught in the act....

At last... caught on film collecting his free evening meal, the pinemarten that has been visiting us here at Evergreen most evenings for sometime. The photo was actually taken yesterday evening by one of our guests who had waited patiently for it to appear. Amazing how after checking the coast was clear he delicately picked the egg up in his mouth to take away and munch elsewhere. Also, not clear in this photo are quite how sharp his claws are!

Another beautiful spring day here on Loch Ness. Just looked out the window to see our local woodpecker hammering away at the telegraph pole like there was no tomorrow! Have not seen it for a long time. Wonderful colours. Here is a photo of it feeding outside our kitchen some months ago.

Interesting story in the Guardian the other day about the sale of a plot of land at nearby Foyers which was once owned by Aleister Crowley, the self-proclaimed'most wicked man in the world'. Boleskine House where he lived for 15 years between 1899-1915 is only a couple of miles from Evergreen, and is today a beautiful private house that overlooks Loch Ness. But, the myth and legend that surrounds Crowley to this day ensures that anything associated with him attracts attention and in this instance, commands a very good price!

Out on another long run yesterday this time through the heartland of Strathnairn up beyond Errogie to the village of Farr. This area is is on a kind of plateau 700ft above Loch Ness and winter certainly hangs on longer here, but yesterday it was a warm 15C, with clear blue skies and absolutely beautiful. The roads are always quiet and I'm able to enjoy the scenery. Close to a place called Brin Rock I stopped by a small river and clearly there in the sand were the tracks of an otter. Must investigate more....

Another run yesterday afternoon with friends Alex and Ed. Alex has great knowledge of the area and this time took us on a great run down to the shores of Loch Ness in a very wild area a few miles from Evergreen where there are no roads or tracks. Hidden in the undergrowth a short distance from where we were is the fabled Fraser Yew. This tree is reputedly over 700 years old and where once the Frasers of Stratherrick would gather and over 100 clansman hide beneath its huge umbrella of foliage.

Boy was our pine marten a happy chap last night - Fiona gave him three eggs to consume ( not even our guests get three eggs in the morning!) However he did then proceed to entertain us playing on the wall and coming right up to our patio window and staring at us through the glass
Wonderful!

Another warm sunny day. Headed off up in to the Monaliath Mountains for my first serious hill run of the year...exhausting and very wet under foot but worth it for the stunning views and all with 20 miles of Inverness!

Nessie bites back....

You've heard all the stories..here's the proof. Out walking down by the shore early this evening when we came across a neighbours boat looking a bit worse for wear. Clearly Nessie got hungry?
Lovely bright morning today..lets hope it stays like this for Easter Weekend. Our regular pinemarten was back a bit later than usual last night to pick up the egg we put out for him. Wonderful animal..so inquisitive and certainly not shy. We call him MrP!

Listen to the silence

'Listen to the Silence' is what Evergreen is all about - peace, tranquility and generally chilling out. That said, as night falls it is good occasionally to hear the gentle calling of a tawny owl making a sound something like 'hoooouh' As it happens there is one in the woods around Evergreen at the moment doing just that. Wonderful...
